  1. The winter of 1978-79 in Britain, marked by a
  2. series of strikes that contributed to the
  3. defeat of the Labour government in the
  4. general election of spring 1979. The phrase
  5. is from Shakespeare's Richard III: `Now is
  6. the winter of our discontent/Made glorious
  7. summer by this sun of York.' The strikes
  8. included Ford Motor Company workers Sept-Nov
  9. 1978, bakery workers Nov-Dec 1978, lorry
  10. drivers Jan-Feb 1979, train drivers Jan 1979,
  11. local-authority workers and health-service
  12. ancillaries and ambulance crews Jan-Mar 1979
  13. (which led to the much publicized failure to
  14. bury dead bodies and to the partial breakdown
  15. of some hospital services), water and
  16. sewerage workers Feb 1979, and civil servants
  17. Feb and Apr 1979.
